Today, on National Siddha Day (19th December 2024), we honour the ancient Siddha tradition with this year’s theme, “Siddha for Public Health.” Public health is not confined to hospitals and clinics—it encompasses workplaces, families, and communities. At Sthir, we believe that workplace well-being is an essential part of public health, and the Siddha tradition offers profound insights to enhance holistic health and harmony.

What is the Siddha Tradition?

The Siddha system is among India’s oldest indigenous medical traditions, with roots tracing back to the Dravidian civilization. Literary evidence from the Sangam Era suggests its origins date as far back as 10,000 BC. Derived from the term ‘Siddhi,’ meaning the attainment of perfection, the Siddha system focuses on holistic health, encompassing physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.

The Siddha system highlights the connection between the universe and the human body (Anda Pinda Thathuvam – same as “Yatha Pinde, Tatha Brahmande” (यथा पिण्डे तथा ब्रह्माण्डे) )and is built on 96 fundamental principles, including the five elements, three humors (doshas – Vata Pitta Kapha), and seven physical constituents (The seven physical constituents (Sapta Dhatus) are Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow), and Shukra (reproductive tissue), forming the body’s essential building blocks.).

Guided by enlightened sages known as Siddhars, the system integrates scientific and spiritual knowledge in ways that resonate with modern approaches to holistic well-being.

The 14 Revered Siddhars

The Siddha tradition is illuminated by the wisdom of great Siddhars, including:

  1. 1. Agasthiyar – The father of the Siddha system.
  2. 2. Thirumoolar – A yogi and author of the Thirumandiram.
  3. 3. Bhognath Siddhar – The alchemist and sage.

Bhognath Siddhar: A Sage Beyond Boundaries

Bhognath Siddhar, also known as Bhoga Siddhar, was a sage, alchemist, yogi, and teacher whose influence transcends borders.

Major Accomplishments:

  1. Navapashanam Idol: He created the legendary Navapashanam idol at the Palani temple, an alchemical marvel crafted from nine toxic substances transformed into a healing elixir. Despite modern attempts, the exact composition remains a mystery.
  2. Transmigration as Lao Tzu: Bhognath Siddhar is believed to have transmigrated and reappeared as Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism. References in Chinese literature to a wandering sage with alchemical and yogic mastery provide fascinating evidence of this connection.
  3. Guru to Mahavatar Babaji: Bhognath Siddhar’s teachings influenced Mahavatar Babaji, the immortal yogi popularized in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda.
  4. Samadhi at Palani: His final resting place at the Palani Murugan Temple in Tamil Nadu makes it a revered pilgrimage site for seekers of Siddha wisdom.
