Case Study

Situation:

A 28-year-old female, an employee of a multinational company, reached out to the Sthir Employee Assistance Program (EAP) helpline in deep distress. She was experiencing two-fold grief: her boyfriend had abruptly broken up with her just two weeks prior, and because they were part of a close-knit friend group, she also lost her social circle.

She shared that she no longer felt comfortable meeting her friends in her ex-partner’s presence, yet she didn’t want to make them choose between her or him. As a result, she became socially withdrawn and isolated, with no one to confide in. The sudden breakup left her with unanswered questions and no closure, intensifying her pain.

The Sthir Approach

Action:

  • From the very first call, Sthir EAP counsellors created a confidential, non-judgmental space where she could express herself freely without fear of being judged. Over the initial weeks, she poured her heart out narrating the stages of her relationship, the abrupt breakup, and the hurt she felt when her ex ignored her presence in the group.

    The counsellor:

    • – Validated her grief and normalized her feelings of hurt and betrayal.
    • – Helped her process the dual loss of both her partner and her friend group.
    • – Provided ongoing emotional support through regular follow-ups.
    • – Encouraged her to focus on available support systems at work instead of isolating herself.
    •

Through these conversations, the counsellors guided her gently toward accepting the breakup as a reality, while also helping her find healthier coping strategies.

Outcome

Results:

  1. Gradually, the caller began navigating her grief with more strength. While she continued to feel the pain of loss, she reported:

    • – Greater acceptance of the breakup as a part of her reality.
    • – Ability to manage work and daily life alongside emotional distress.
    • – Confidence in leaning on supportive colleagues for encouragement.
    • – A sense of reassurance that, over time, she could rebuild her social connections.

By the end of the intervention, she felt less isolated and more hopeful. She experienced firsthand how Sthir EAP’s prompt response, confidentiality, empathetic counselling, and consistent follow-ups empowered her to move through grief and begin reclaiming her emotional wellbeing.
