Case Study

Situation:

The wife of a sales employee from a multinational lubricant company called the Sthir Employee Assistance Program (EAP) helpline, deeply worried about her father’s recovery after major surgery.

She brought her father to live in her marital home so she could manage his hospital follow-ups and provide round-the-clock care. While this decision ensured medical attention, she noticed that he withdrew into himself and often appeared low in mood.

She tried cheering him up by engaging him in conversations and recalling old memories, but nothing seemed to work. Over time, she started questioning whether moving him during recovery was the right decision. At the same time, she juggled the roles of daughter, wife, and caregiver, which left her feeling stretched and fatigued.

The Sthir Approach

Action:

From the very first call, Sthir EAP counsellors responded promptly. They:

  • – Explained how elderly patients often show mood changes after surgery.
  • – Reassured her that keeping her father with her supported his recovery.
  • – Created a confidential, non-judgmental space where she voiced her doubts and exhaustion freely.
  •

Over the next several weeks, the counsellors followed up consistently and kept her supported throughout her caregiving journey. They also helped her focus on her own wellbeing. Together, they:

  • – Encouraged her to delegate tasks whenever possible.
  • – Helped her create small self-care routines to prevent burnout.
  • – Guided her to redefine bonding with her father, not through constant conversations, but through quiet companionship and presence.
  •

Outcome

Results:

  1. Gradually, she noticed a positive shift. While her father remained reserved, they built an unspoken understanding that reassured both of them. Doctors confirmed his recovery was progressing well.

By the end of the intervention:

    • – She felt more confident and less burdened in her caregiving role.
    • – Her father recovered steadily, supported by her presence and care.
    • – She experienced firsthand how Sthir EAP’s prompt response, confidentiality, empathetic counselling, and timely follow-ups strengthened her resilience and gave her clarity in navigating caregiving challenges.
